Well I don't think I have much of a choice other than explaining now, he is coming over here.

I don't suppose I could trouble you for some last minute relationship saving advice? I'm not really the "winging it" kind of person.

I imagine you know better than to cut and run again? Because that aside--he does not see himself as a person worth caring about. He sees a monster. Tell him he isn't--no. Better, tell him why you want this. When you're not wondering what his problem is, what do you like?


Give him reasons to accept that even if he can't see himself as anything but a monster, that's not what you see.

Well I don't know why he'd think that, he's a highly capable, highly trained warrior with an obvious sense of honor and a clear cut desire to help his fellow man.

The love of battle just makes him more interesting, if he needs someone to inform him of that then I can, it's not hard. It's basic fact.

[It's an opinion but when you're not used to having those, they sure sound like fact!]

If this is the perception of himself he has, clearly it isn't basic fact to everyone. You're trying to break through a lifetime's worth of indoctrination. It isn't going to be easy.

A lie spoken often enough becomes truth, I can assure you it is a lesson I already know quite well. I would repeat the truth then a hundred thousand times over and smother that lie to death, I'd be happy to do so.

[There's a bite to the words that border on almost righteous anger, as if personally offended at the idea that Balthiel would have had to endure such a vile untruth.]

Father figures are absolutely stellar at that particular lie. If you're prepared to repeat the truth as long as it takes, you don't need any more advice from me. Just--don't give up on him. Don't give him hope that he can be more than what he's always been told he's for if you can't keep reinforcing that.
