STATISTICS

Character Name: Gabriel
Character Canon: Ultrakill
Character Age: Old, he's an angel so no doubt well over a thousand.
Canon Point: Just after the end of Act 2, after being defeated by V1 for a second time, reaching an epiphany and returning to heaven to slaughter the Council.
Link to History: Link
Skills: Fast learner: Gabriel needs to be able to adapt as quickly as possible to the changes of the battle field, and learn from his opponents, sooner rather than later. Considering his until recently unbroken chain of victories, he's been exceptionally good at this. He's highly observant in this regard, which carries over to social interactions and people quite neatly, if his popularity in both Heaven and Hell are of any indication.

Adept swordsman: Gabriel is an accomplished swordsman, exactly what it says on the tin. He wields two swords in hand to hand combat and has been lauded for his skill and efficiency with them.

Strategist: With countless battles under his belt, Gabriel was (up until recently), an unmatched master of battle strategy. One of his points of pride was how brutally efficient he is in all matters of combat, typically capable of identifying weak points to exploit in enemy defenses and moral, and being more than willing to do so without hesitation.

Abilities: I will be using Gabriel's abilities as seen in Brutal Mode:

-Enhanced speed: Gabriel can move within the blink of an eye, though his path can be followed via after images.
-Flight
-Teleportation (nerfed to several feet)
-Light weapon projections (Ax, sword, spear) These are used as projectiles, though if his own personal swords are out of play, can be used for melee in a pinch.
-Light weapon shields (it's more swords he likes his motif). These will circle around him and damage his attacker at close range. If struck with enough force they'll ricochet at him, otherwise he'll eventually order them to surround his opponent and throw themselves inwards at them.
-Highly skilled swordsman and user of holy magic. Gabriel weaves both his swordsplay and his magic together as he fights, utilizing the confusion and chaos this causes, paired with his high speed to his advantage.

CHARACTERIZATION

FORMATIVE EXPERIENCES:
  • FIRST EVENT: - Gabriel was not the only archangel of heaven. While the Council is never individually named, Lucifer existed alongside Gabriel as another supreme angel. Contrary to typical Abrahamic biblical canon, Lucifer was kind, warm and curious, and his crime against God was simply to question Him. He asked if eternal punishment was really a fate fit for a fool, and in response God hurled him into Hell. It was an act that cemented the idea that God's will was not to be questioned, and that a single failure could lead to the ultimate punishment. The only thing that could ever be accepted was total obedience and peerless perfection.

  • SECOND EVENT: - When God vanished, and Heaven temporarily withdrew from Hell to deal with the sudden power vacuum, the denizens of Hell began to mobilize. While Sisyphus began to gather power for an outright insurrection, King Minos, the Judge of Hell, set about starting a 'peaceful' rebellion, turning the Lust layer into a sprawling utopia. He had known Gabriel prior to God's abandonment, and had truly believed that the archangel would see reason if it was but only explained to him. He could not have accounted for how fanatical and devoted Gabriel was to the order of the Council, and without hesitation Gabriel slaughtered the gentle King before his people. Gabriel called it justice. The subjects of Minos only saw it as murder, and treachery.

  • THIRD EVENT: - Mankind was wiped out in a single catastrophic event, and Hell was soon overrun with their mechanical creations. Gabriel, the new Judge of Hell, set about culling the horde, making quick work of every machine he came across, save for one. For the first time in his life, he was bested in combat, and it was by a machine, something considered even lower than mortals. Humiliated and enraged, he retreated to heaven, only to have his failure thrown back in his face by the Council. His loss was considered evidence that he had squandered his power, and had lost his faith in God, and as punishment his body was severed from the life sustaining Light of the Father. The Council gave Gabriel twenty four hours to correct his 'mistake', and kill V1, the machine that defeated him. Filled with hatred, Gabriel returned to Hell to hunt V1 down.

  • FOURTH EVENT: - Gabriel finally found V1 in Heresy, and challenged it to a battle again. Though he started the battle infuriated, as he started to lose, his demeanor began to shift. For the first time in his life, he began to enjoy something, finding happiness and catharsis in the need to struggle for something for once. He lost again and, shaken by his feeling of relief at this, left the battle field to think. Once alone, he came to the conclusion that God had truly abandoned them, and that he had been used by the Council to enact a reign of terror and fear in the interest of maintaining their tyranny.

  • FIFTH EVENT: - Driven by his newly forged resolve and his desire to atone, Gabriel returned to heaven. There, he slaughtered the Council, only pausing once to hear the pleas of the final senator as they begged for their life. He was told that should he kill the final Councilor there, he would never be able to be reconnected with the Light of the Father, and would thus condemn himself to death as readily as he did them. Gabriel however, was already aware of this, and decapitated the final angel nevertheless. Brandishing the fallen senator's head to the gathered crowds in heaven, Gabriel's final act was to return to Hell, to use his final hours to drive back the machine invasion, and to find and finish his battle with V1, once and for all.

PHILOSOPHY: Gabriel's philosophy is presently in a state of change. Prior to his battle with V1, it was simple: everything that the Council deemed criminal or unworthy of life, deserved to be destroyed. While he would have insisted that there is only light and dark, good and evil, he would have also admitted that those who have done wrong could and should be able to achieve forgiveness. He believed that open acts of compassion were a sign of weakness, though it was still a weakness he would frequently indulge in with pious sinners and those who sought absolution. That does not mean he finds all sins forgivable, and still deeply believes that there are crimes beyond all redemption, unto which the only remedy is execution.

With the Council destroyed however, most of this philosophy is now in flux and subject to serious change as he questions everything he's ever known. Finally able to see that he's capable of making his own choices and thinking for himself, he still holds tight to the old beliefs, though his faith in it is now shaken.

DESIRES: Gabriel's only singular desire for himself that sat outside of the Council's wishes was to see the penitent sinners of Hell relieved of their punishment and brought into Heaven. He attempted time and time again to convince the Council of this, to no avail, and would repeatedly return to Hell to console those he'd promised he'd save. Now that Hell lies in ruins and this desire has proven to be an impossible ask, his only desire is to drive back the invaders, and battle V1 one more time. He's never really wanted much for himself, if only because he's never been allowed to, nor has he ever been taught that was something that could be allowed to him to begin with.

Naturally though, the only way one gets to fight their beloved enemy to the death is by hunting them down, and slaughtering anything that happens to stand in their way.

FEARS: Gabriel has been a weapon for so long, that being anything else, especially a person, is horrifying to him. A person after all, would look at all of the things Gabriel has done, and been sickened by it. There is no apologizing nor fixing the damage he has caused, and he cannot give back the lives he's taken in the service of the Council. It does not matter that he was used, it does not matter that he was manipulated; he knows now that he could have said no, and it is far too late to do anything about it. Even worse, as a person he would have to acknowledge that he enjoyed some of what he did, filled with righteous vengeance legitimized by the Council's direction of him.

When put in a position where he must think about his actions, and the legitimacy of his own personhood, he backs away from it, unwilling to truly confront the scale of his crimes against humanity; seeking some dark solace in the fact that soon he will be dead and he will have 'atoned' in that way for what he's done. Dying after all, is very easy, but living is far, far harder.

WRONGS: His list of crimes are long, and he would admit to this readily and without hesitation, though not without guilt. Gabriel has killed hundreds, perhaps thousands of people all in the name of heaven, put to the sword kind and peaceful kings, sent countless souls to endless torment and perpetuated abuse and terror, simply at the behest of the Council. He does not think for himself well, and defers easily to those he sees as being more authoritative, powerful or otherwise 'above' him.

Gabriel has a horrifically short temper, and while it doesn't always explode into violence, it can lead to arguments and tantrums when pushed too far. His morals are starkly black and white, and while there's more wiggle room in them now that he's discovering himself, it's all still quite ironclad. He also clearly enjoys violence to some degree, though typically he reserves this for people he deems as dangerous and 'evil'. That's not to say he doesn't enjoy a little sanctioned violence between peers of course... You have to let off steam somehow.
GAMEPLAY

SUITABILITY:

Gabriel is a powder keg waiting to blow, a big pressurized tank full of guilt, repression, harmful ideologies and conflicting desires. He's heavily compartmentalized himself to the point where Gabriel The Weapon and Gabriel The Angel are almost two entirely separate entities, due to how poorly these two ideologies mix with each other. He simply cannot be the person he wants to be, because he doesn't know who that person is, nor can he be the weapon he was made to be anymore. He's never utilized his free will before in his entire life, and frankly has no idea what to do with it now, outside of his decision to die in Hell in a blaze of glory. Capable of both incredible compassion and incredible violence, he's also judgemental, confrontational, extremely dramatic and very sensitive.

The mechanics of the game would really punish him for continuing to compartmentalize and refuse to address his issues with himself. He might not want to cause undue damage anymore, but unless he actually tries to help himself, he'd have no choice but to continue to hurt people. Gabriel would be able to adjust to the demands for sex and violence (eventually), but it'd be far more difficult for him to deal with the demand to release his pent up emotions.

He'll have to better himself, or perpetuate the same mistakes he's made for his entire stupid life here, and further more, he'll be forced to live. He'll have no choice. Denied the execution he so dearly believes he deserves, Gabriel will have to confront the things that he's done, and sit with that. Acknowledge that he cannot be forgiven for what he has done, and must find closure on his own, or face the consequences of that. I'd love for him to put himself out there and actually be the hero he really thought he was, and learn who he could have been if he'd been given half the chance.

SAMPLE: Gabriel stumbles upon V1 while looking for a room to claim at the boarding house | CW: Some Blood/Violence

MONSTER: When transformed, Gabriel becomes what is effectively an angelic were-beast. With the body of a massive black cat decorated in gold designs and a pair of blue, luminous wings, it is capable of both running on all fours, standing on two legs, or flying. The beasts head is little more than a ball of light, with a singular, gigantic eye sat in the center of it. This eye does not adhere to euclidean geometry and regardless of where someone stands, it always appears to be facing them head on.

In order to attack, it must blind itself, closing the eye and opening it to reveal a toothy mouth instead. From this it will shoot Gabriel's arsenal of light weapons: the spear, the ax and the sword. It may also attack with it's claws, or attempt to bite its victims, and will viciously maul and devour them.

Just like Gabriel, the Beast is capable of teleportation and blinding speed, though unlike Gabriel it is almost completely silent until it attempts to deliver a killing blow.

Notably, the Beast never seems to stop weeping, leaving pools of brilliant blue, faintly glowing water in its wake, making it easy to track.
