🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Gabriel
Age: Considering he's an angel, he's probably Old as Balls old. 1000+
Canon: Ultrakill
Canon Point: The end of Act 2, after killing the Council of Heaven
Character History: Gabriel wiki!
Canon Abilities: I will be using Gabriel's abilities as seen in Brutal Mode:
-Enhanced speed: Gabriel can move within the blink of an eye, though his path can be followed via after images.
-Flight
-Teleportation (nerfed to several feet)
-Light weapon projections (Ax, sword, spear) These are used as projectiles, though if his own personal swords are out of play, can be used for melee in a pinch.
-Light weapon shields (it's more swords he likes his motif). These will circle around him and damage his attacker at close range. If struck with enough force they'll ricochet at him, otherwise he'll eventually order them to surround his opponent and throw themselves inwards at them.
-Highly skilled swordsman and user of holy magic. Gabriel weaves both his swordsplay and his magic together as he fights, utilizing the confusion and chaos this causes, paired with his high speed to his advantage.
Inventory: Just his armor and his swords, Justice and Splendor.

🦋 Personality

Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your characters thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer. For Canon Characters, you can choose four questions. For Original Characters, you will need to choose six questions. Keep the word count to 150-400 per question.
  1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?

  2. Gabriel is a magical entity, so magic to him is as natural as breathing. His morals may dictate what types of magic are 'good' and 'bad', and Gabriel himself views it as another tool at his disposal, but his opinions of it are otherwise neutral. His ideas surrounding the morality of magic is quite simple: don't be a bastard. Mind control, necromancy, and other things that disturb or remove someone's ability to think or act for themselves is instantly in the No No book.

The irony of this isn't lost on him, considering his relationship with Heaven and the Council, but that's different, because he wasn't magically compelled to hurt anyone. In fact it could be argued that anything that might infringe on a person's free will might be potentially triggering for Gabriel after the events of Act 2.

  3. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?

  4. Gabriel would without any hesitation wish for the penitent sinners of his home to receive forgiveness. As the former Judge of Hell, it was his duty to send all those who were cast into Hell to their rightful places of punishment, but as any decent judge would feel, he didn't believe in eternal punishment. Of course, what Gabriel believed meant nothing to the Council, a weapon isn't supposed to have those, and all of his attempts to see pious and remorseful sinners released from their punishment were rejected. This never stopped him from continuing to try, and such was his devotion to these penitent souls that he 'forgot' to tell the Council about the existence of the idols.

That being said, Gabriel's forgiveness is not without its limits, and there are of course crimes beyond that which can ever be meaningfully pardoned. He's very meaningful about which is which and has extremely rigid rules for what is considered an error that can be corrected, and what is a crime that cannot be excused. He's an exceptionally prideful person, usually convinced of his own judgement of character, and often times comes across as patronizing even when he's being genuinely kind. Gabriel is arrogant, and this often lends to the appearance that he may think himself above judgement. This assumption would be incorrect.

Gabriel himself is convinced that his own crimes run too deeply to be properly forgiven without disrespecting the memory of those he's hurt and killed in his service to Heaven. While he may come across as a short tempered and arrogant authority figure, he is not a corrupt being in any sense of the word, and he does not exempt himself from his own morals or judgement. Therefore, he considers himself subject to the very same punishment that he himself has given others.

  5. What song would a siren sing to your character to lure them closer? Why?

  6. Parce Domine would do the trick, without question.

An old Catholic hymn about repentance and forgiveness. Gabriel has worked for centuries ever since he was placed in charge of Hell's care to redeem those who showed remorse for their sins. He knows that it's pointless cruelty, to punish someone endlessly for things that were simply mistakes, and has made multiple earnest, though ultimately empty promises to the mortal souls in his care. There are several shrines to Gabriel within Hell, made by sinners pleading with him for forgiveness that he himself was unable to extend to them due to the limits of his authority.

He himself knows he's committed acts of needless violence upon those who did not deserve it, and his decision to execute the corrupt council of Heaven shows that he has failed to forgive himself for what he's done; only the council could have saved his life, after severing his body from the Light of the Father. Regardless, he killed every single one of them, knowing that in doing so he was sentencing himself to death as well. Now aware of his own capacity for autonomy, his crimes weigh heavily on him, as his acts as the Will of God were rationalized by the Council as necessary, to keep those who would defy them from challenging the might of Heaven. Whatever reservations he had were buried and forgotten about, doubtless fearful of what questioning the council would mean on a spiritual and existential level. This does not absolve him of his crimes against humanity and the damned however, and this is a belief that he holds on to very tightly. Gabriel is many things, but a hypocrite is not one of them.

Parce Domine is a mortal plea for forgiveness, born of regret for their sins and a desire to improve, and be loved and protected. He'd be unable to resist following this, wanting to answer this cry for atonement, not just for the being singing it but to seek relief for his own overwhelming guilt as well.

  7. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.

  8. V1, the only thing to ever best him. Prior to the machine invasion of Hell, Gabriel was undefeated in combat, until V1 showed up and beat him not once, but twice. This is not because Gabriel simply wasn't equipped to deal with war machines either; it's implied within the game that he had been cutting down every robot he met prior to encountering V1, and expected his match with this Machine to be no different.

Instead, he had his ass soundly kicked. The first time this happened, he retreated to Heaven, ashamed at his loss, something that the council only exacerbated as they questioned both his competence and his faith over this. After all, Gabriel had been blessed with the Light of the Father, the very essence of God's will, which should have been all powerful. It was decided he didn't lose because V1 had been better, but because Gabriel had squandered his gifts. The life sustaining Light was painfully ripped from him, and he was given only twenty four hours to fix his 'mistake', or else he'd be left to die in Hell.

He blamed V1 for this humiliation, though during his second battle with the Machine it seems some of that blame is extended towards himself as he proclaims he will 'right his wrongs' by defeating V1. He clearly believes that he is somehow sinful for losing, and that in defeating the Machine he'll be able to atone. Midway through the battle though, for the first time in his entire life, he begins to experience genuine exhilaration. Having never needed to struggle for anything before, the thrill of needing to push himself to be better seems to light a fire in him, and when he's defeated a second time, he shows nothing short of relief. The loss was a turning point, finally forcing him to think about what he truly wanted, and what he'd really done.

When he reaches his epiphany after the battle, Gabriel returns to Hell rather than choosing to die in Heaven. The desire to best V1 in battle and drive back the machine horde is the first actual desire he's ever had for himself, and he is intensely infatuated now with the Machine, as it is the reason he now knows what it's like to be truly free.
